Where the wild things are

Since the onset of spring, we’ve had lots of visitors come by our place. We’ve welcomed them all — even those of a different variety.

Our cats are especially fond of the “different variety,” scurrying after birds and squirrels at full tilt the second the four sneaky felines can squeeze their furry heads out the door.

Since putting up birdfeeders and putting out food, our back yard has been a sight to behold. See for yourself.

Suzy’s Mother’s Day Birthday Party

May 13 th

Suzy Shepard, or Shushi as some of us endearingly call her, turned 60 on Sunday, May 10.

To know Shushi is to know a great mother, one who is selfless and loving. It’s no wonder her birthday always falls within a few days of Mother’s Day.

So her four children — Benjamin, Carl, Marilyn and Michael — decided to honor their mom with a surprise “MDay-BDay” party on a beautiful spring Sunday at Tilles Park. Family and close friends arrived bearing gifts, food and tons of admiration for Shushi and the rest of the stellar moms in attendance. Big thanks to everyone who made it memorable.

Now, go hug your mother.

Runs and puns

April 29 th

As a kid, I didn’t like running. If sports or play involved running, it was OK, but cross-country teams or track-and-field teams or mile-long trips around the track were boring, exhaustive nightmares.

That’s why I surprised myself when I decided back in February to sign up for the Go! St. Louis Marathon Relay with three of my co-workers. When I came home the day of the sign-up and shared the news with Ben, he laughed before asking, “Are you sure about this?”

Well, I never was sure — in fact, I spent most days regretting my decision to participate — but I did it! On Sunday, April 19, I ran/walked just over 6 miles on a very wet spring day in St. Louis. Within two minutes of the start of my leg, my shoes and socks were soaked and I was on my way to being drenched. But after about 85 minutes, I was at my finish line in Forest Park. True runners would laugh at that time, but I’m proud to have conquered a challenge that years ago would’ve sent me … running! Aren’t I punny?
